The memory

In the auto. In the kitchen. At the barber. Inside the bus. At the roadside shop. In Dad’s car. You didn’t choose the song. You didn’t skip it. You didn’t know what was coming next. A familiar voice would suddenly come through the speakers and everyone would just carry on with whatever they were doing. Sometimes you knew every word. Sometimes you didn’t know the song at all. But somehow, years later, you remember exactly what it sounded like coming through that little speaker. Before algorithms knew what you liked, the radio introduced you to India.
